Lately it seems that a good night sleep has become a highly priced commodity. And the more people complain about the lack of sleep, the more we discover the negative impact this can have on our health. Science has just discovered another reason to take your sleeping time seriously.

We need at least 7.5 hours of sleep a day. But since we struggle with work and everything that needs to be done after work, we cut our sleeping time. And the negative consequences of insufficient sleep are alarming.

We already knew that not sleeping enough can lead to reduced concentration and poor performance. But now, the researchers from the University of Zurich and the University Hospital Zurich have discovered that being sleep deprived can make us more inclined to take risks.

They studied the sleep behaviors of people from 18 to 28 years old.  And they found that those who slept only 5 hours a night had riskier behavior.

To make things worse, people did not notice that they acted differently. So the risky behavior was not balanced by taking other cautionary measures. The explanation for this is that the prefrontal cortex cannot recover properly when we skip sleep for a long period of time.
