It looks like we live in an age of high narcissism. We all know narcissists are those horrible people who want to manipulate others and who only think of themselves. But is that the whole picture?
Psychologists say that a narcissist is someone who has buried their true self as a result of emotional wounds and replaced it with a false compensatory self.
So it’s not just about being in love with oneself. In fact, it has little to do with love or acceptance. Contrary to popular belief, narcissists are not people with high self-esteem. However, there is a strong correlation between self-esteem and narcissism. Narcissists perceive themselves differently than other people and tend to put themselves on a pedestal. Also, their relationship with their self-esteem is a rather odd one.
So how can we tell the difference between a narcissist and a person with high self-esteem? Where do we draw the line between having self-worth and the belief that we’re in fact superior?
A recent study suggests there is one thing that can help us spot a narcissist very easily. Apparently, these people can’t handle criticism and they usually respond aggressively when someone criticizes them.
Here are 7 other signs that you are in a relationship with one:
1. They love to talk about themselves
If you notice the conversations you have with your partner are always one-sided, there’s a problem.
2. They always interrupt when you’re the one talking
And then, when you finally get to do the talking, they feel the need to interrupt. Perhaps only to contradict you.
3. They break promises, obligations, and rules
These people take great pleasure in getting away from rules that everybody is supposed to obey.
4. They expect preferential treatment from others
They believe they’re kings of the universe. They expect to be treated like royalty, naturally.
5. They can be charming and persuasive
They can make you feel special and wanted, but once they don’t need you anymore, they’ll find a way to get rid of you.
6. Narcissists always use others for their own advantage
That’s a no-brainer. They walk over dead bodies to get what they want.
7. They’re always in need of praise
In constant need of a shoutout. Being on top of the world requires support, right?
Now you know how to spot a narcissist, stay away from them!
