From an evolutionary point of view, it makes sense to be wary when it comes to trying new things. New could mean dangerous. Not to mention the fact that you probably will look silly the first time when you try something new. Next time you hesitate, keep in mind the following things:

1. Nobody is watching you

More often than not, when we try something new and we are anxious about it, we feel like we are in the spotlight, that every mistake we make will be noticed and made fun of. Well, that’s just an illusion. Nobody is watching you fail and if by chance they do notice you, they don’t care. When was the last time you’ve laughed out loud noticing a grown-up learning to ride a bike?

2. Don’t expect to master the new skill immediately

If you try something new for the first time and you expect to instantly become a master at it, you are just setting yourself up for failure. Learning implies making mistakes, trying again and gradually becoming better at it. Allow yourself to make mistakes, have fun and don’t ask too much from yourself!

3. Do a little prep work beforehand

Preparing yourself before actually doing something new, learning from others or from your own research can drastically diminish the anxiety. Rehearsing means almost doing it. So call your mother and get her advice before starting to cook your first meal!
