We cannot choose who we fall in love with. That’s sadly beyond our control. There is always the possibility they might not love you back. Well, that’s a special kind of pain, the pain of unrequited love.

Even if we’re very much in touch with and aware of our constant ebb and flow of emotions, we still fall into this trap. I think we can call it a trap, or a never-ending spiral. A chase that keeps us in the ultimate game of love. It’s as much of a trap as it is a game.

So pursuing someone who barely knows we exist can have serious consequences for us. Or we could have started having feelings for our friend, whom we no longer see as just a friend.
But we soon realize they will never see us as more than just a friend, that for them the love will always be platonic and not romantic.

That is a cruel situation indeed.
Unrequited love can cause a great deal of emotional damage and it can take many forms. Of course, we cannot compare divorce cases with someone simply refusing to go out on a date with you.

But no matter the form and depth, unrequited love hurts and has the potential to keep us stuck. The whole feeling is based on the hope that one day, maybe one day…they will feel the same way about you.
What we are clinging to in fact is the hope that things and feelings may change. We’re sometimes stubborn in our own ways of thinking when we believe that circumstances can be different at a certain point in the future.

The moment you realize you don’t really have the power over the other person’s feelings, you will feel liberated. And it’s your choice at the end of the day. If it hurts too much, you can choose not to stay friends with that person anymore.
Whatever you do, know that you have the strength to move on and fall in love with someone who will fall back in love with you.
