How To Overcome A Creative Block

Sometimes, creativity seems to be a capricious mistress. It comes and goes as it pleases. But there are some tricks that may bring it back when we need it.

1. Learn something new

Reading a course on line, watching a YouTube tutorial about a subject you’re not familiar with, going to a museum you haven’t visited before will surely get your creative juices flowing. The exposure to new ideas will inspire you.

2. Put some ideas aside for rainy days

When you feel creative and everything flows smoothly, save some ideas for the times when you feel blocked.  In this manner, you can develop an idea that came to you in an inspired moment. It’s like having a saving account, but for ideas.

3. Write about yourself

Without the pressure of being original, write whatever comes to your mind. Your thoughts, your emotions, the events of the day. Once you get into the flow or writing, you never know what inspired ideas you might get.

4. Get some exercise

Exercising boosts your cognitive abilities and therefore your creativity. So get out from behind your desk and get your blood and creative juices flowing!

5. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself

Chances are that the more stressed you are about your creative ideas, the less creative you’ll be. So when you feel stuck, don’t put too much pressure on yourself. Go for a walk, think about a different, less demanding project and don’t feel guilty. Remember that you are not a machine whose creativity can be turned on with a push of a button!
